One Slow Song
Maya's father is still in his chair, and the band keeps playing fast songs. This is her sister's wedding. The hall is loud, the cake is gone, and some guests are already looking for their coats. Before the wedding her father said, "Save one dance for me. A slow one." Maya said yes. She has not danced with him yet.
His knee hurts. He can stand, and he can walk, but he cannot move like the cousins on the floor. A fast song is too much for him. Maya watches the singer start another quick song, and she knows there is not much time left.
She walks to the stage. Her hands are cold. The singer drinks water and looks at her.
"Can you play one slow song?" she asks. "My father wants to dance. He cannot dance to the fast songs."
