The History of the Telephone

Thomas Watson waited in the next room. He had a wire and a receiver. Alexander Graham Bell was on the other side of the wall, and he wanted one simple thing. He wanted Watson to hear his voice.

Bell came from Scotland and lived in America. He worked with people who could not hear, so he thought about sound all day. In the laboratory, he and Watson tried to send sound along a wire and turn it back into sound. For a long time Watson heard only scratches. He did not hear words.

In those years a voice could not travel to another city. If you wanted to speak to a friend far away, you wrote a letter. You put the paper in an envelope and you waited. A letter could take days. A wire could already carry a code of short and long sounds.
