The Emperor Penguin Doesn't Build a Nest
An emperor penguin is a bird from Antarctica. It lives on sea ice near the ocean. Its body has black, white, and yellow feathers. The bird doesn't live in a tree, and it doesn't need a branch.
Like every penguin, it doesn't fly. Its short wings move in the water. It doesn't use them to travel through the air. In the ocean, the wings help the bird swim.
In the Antarctic winter, the female lays one egg. She doesn't put it in a fixed nest. Emperor penguins don't build fixed nests. The female gives the egg to the male.
The male doesn't put the egg on the ice. He holds it on his feet. A warm fold of skin covers the egg. The egg doesn't touch the cold ground.
The male stays with the egg for many weeks.
