The Great Fire of London
In the year 1666, London was a very busy city. Most people lived in small houses, and the streets were very narrow. Builders made these houses from wood, and they stood close to each other.
On the second of September, Thomas Farriner was sleeping in his home. He was a baker for the king. In the middle of the night, a fire started in his bakery. He woke up when he smelled smoke. He and his family escaped from a window, but a young servant did not wake up in time.
The wind was blowing strongly that night. The fire moved quickly from house to house. People were running through the streets with their bags and furniture. They were trying to save their things, but they did not have much time.
The mayor of London did not think the fire was dangerous at first.
