The Phone Rang While Mom Was Cooking
I am Nina. Last Thursday evening Mom was cooking dinner in our kitchen. Dad was reading the newspaper at the table. I was doing homework in my room upstairs.
Mom was chopping vegetables when the phone rang. She wiped her hands and answered it quickly. The caller was Aunt Rosa, and she sounded worried.
While Mom was talking, Dad was still reading near the window. I was listening from the stairs because the voice sounded loud. Rosa was explaining a problem at work.
Suddenly Rosa stopped talking and the line went quiet. Mom was asking questions, but nobody answered. Then Rosa called back thirty seconds later.
While Rosa was speaking again, I was writing notes about my math task. Hugo, my brother, was playing a game in the living room. He was not listening to the kitchen conversation.
