The Match We Almost Lost
Our school football team played an important match last Saturday against Riverside College. I was playing midfield, and the weather was cold but dry when the referee started the game.
In the first half we were controlling the ball well. Tom was passing accurately while Jake was running down the left side. The crowd was cheering every time we were entering the opponent half.
Riverside was not attacking much at first. Their goalkeeper was staying near the line while their defenders were watching our forwards closely.
Ten minutes before half time everything changed. Their striker was breaking through when our captain was slipping on the grass. The striker was shooting fast, and the ball was hitting the net before our keeper was reacting.
We were walking to the dressing room quietly. Coach Miller was speaking calmly while we were drinking water and were not blaming anyone for the mistake.
