Grandma Told Us About Her Younger Days
I am Mia. Last Sunday my grandma Rosa visited our house for lunch. After we washed the dishes, she sat in the armchair by the window and told my brother and me stories about her younger days in a small village near the mountains.
She said she left school at sixteen and began work in a bakery on the main street. The owner taught her to shape bread before sunrise and to keep the oven at the right temperature. Rosa woke at four on cold mornings and walked to work in the dark with a scarf around her head.
One winter she met our grandpa Tomas at a dance in the town hall. He wore a dark jacket and brought her a cup of hot tea when her hands felt stiff from the cold hall.
