The Train Had Departed Before We Reached the Station
Rushing across a crowded city to catch an intercity train requires meticulous planning, especially when unexpected road traffic threatens your departure timetable. Last Saturday, my brother Liam and I planned to travel from Birmingham to Edinburgh to attend our cousin's wedding celebration. Our morning express train was scheduled to leave New Street Station at exactly ten minutes past nine.
Unfortunately, our journey to the railway terminal was plagued by unforeseen complications from the very beginning. The taxi that we had booked on Friday evening arrived fifteen minutes late because utility workers were repairing a gas leak on our street. Then, a minor collision between two delivery vans created a massive vehicular queue along the main ring road. Liam and I watched the dashboard clock with mounting panic as precious minutes ticked away while our vehicle crawled through slow traffic.
