The Long Road Home

When the airline had cancelled our connecting flight in Frankfurt, my brother and I had not expected to spend an unplanned night in a city we had visited only once before. What had seemed like a simple journey from Nairobi to Manchester became a story we have retold at every family gathering since that winter.

We had left Kenya after three years because our contracts had ended and our parents had asked us to return for a wedding. The morning had started calmly. We had checked in online, had passed security without delay, and had boarded a plane that had departed on time. By midday everything had changed.
