Building a Community Garden
Five years ago the vacant lot on Cedar Street had attracted litter more often than visitors. Neighbours had complained at meetings, yet nobody had proposed a practical solution until Mrs Okonkwo had suggested a shared garden during a council forum in March 2019.
She had retired from nursing two years earlier and had missed the teamwork hospitals had provided. Her idea had sounded ambitious, but a small group had volunteered to investigate soil quality and water access. Engineers had tested the ground and had confirmed that raised beds could work if volunteers had maintained them regularly.
Fundraising had started slowly. Local businesses had donated tools after shop owners had heard presentations at the chamber of commerce. A hardware store had offered timber at cost because the manager had grown vegetables himself and had understood the project's value.
