How Long Have You Been Studying Medicine?
I am Dr. Patel. Every September I speak with first-year students at the university hospital, and one question always appears in our orientation sessions.
How long have you been studying medicine before arriving here? Some students have been preparing since secondary school, while others have been exploring different careers for years before they applied.
Last week a student named Ines told me she has been volunteering in clinics since she was sixteen. She has been observing nurses and doctors during summer breaks, and she has been reading medical journals in two languages to widen her vocabulary.
Another student, Malik, said he has been working as a paramedic for four years. He has been handling emergency calls that have been teaching him calm under pressure. He has been taking night classes to complete entry requirements before he enrolled this term.
