A Teacher Explains Finished Time and Open Time
Good morning, class. I am Ms Patel, and today we will read a short guide I wrote for choosing present perfect or past simple. Keep your notebooks open because we will mark time words in two colours.
Rule one: if you see a finished clock or calendar point, past simple usually fits. I visited Paris in 2018. She called me at six yesterday. They moved house last summer. Those moments are closed. The year 2018 does not continue into today as an open period for that visit.
Rule two: if the action connects to now, present perfect often fits. I have visited Paris twice. She has called me three times this week. They have lived here since 2020. The experience or situation still matters today. We care about result or duration, not only the date on a ticket.
