Timeline on the Wall: Since Then and Two Years Ago
Our history teacher Mr Doyle covered one wall with a long paper timeline. Each student added cards about family events, and the display became a lesson in present perfect versus past simple without a formal lecture.
At the left, cards show finished dates. My classmate Jay wrote: My grandfather retired in 2015. He worked at a steel plant for thirty years. Another card says: We moved to this town in 2018. The ink is blue, and the year is underlined twice.
Near the centre, cards use since and still. Aisha pinned: I have played violin since I was seven. Her bow grip has improved this term. Ben added: Our band has practiced in the garage since September. The noise has annoyed one neighbour, he joked.
On the right, recent past simple events sit beside present perfect results.
