Fresh Food That Is Sold at the Weekend Market
Every Saturday our town square becomes a market. Stalls are set up before dawn, and fresh food is sold until early afternoon. Local producers arrive in vans that are parked along side streets.
Vegetables are displayed in wooden crates. Tomatoes are grown in greenhouses nearby, and carrots are washed before they are packed. Leafy herbs are picked on Friday evening so they stay crisp overnight.
Fruit is arranged by season. Apples are stored in cold rooms during the week, and berries are sold in small punnets. When strawberries are ripe, they are eaten quickly because they are not treated with long preservatives.
Bread and pastries are brought from village bakeries. Sourdough loaves are sliced on request, and olive rolls are warmed under a small lamp. Samples are offered politely, and napkins are placed beside each tray.
