Email to Clara: Kinder Scout on Saturday

Clara, I am not taking you onto the top if the cloud is sitting there. You want the photo from the highest point in the Peak District, and I want it too, but I know what the peat does when you cannot see the next stone.

Kinder Scout rises above Edale, in the Derbyshire hills. In 1932 walkers went up onto this moor because it was closed to them, and people still tell that story on the way up. The top is not a neat path. It is deep, wet peat.

If fog covers the plateau, the channels hide the way, and if you leave the path in that cloud, you walk in circles. If the peat is soaked, it closes around a boot. I learned that on a school trip, and I do not want the lesson twice.
