Cooking Dinner with My Flatmate

Sharing a flat with another university student requires good communication, compromise, and an organized culinary routine. Every Tuesday evening, my flatmate Marco and I cook a large vegetarian dinner together in our compact shared kitchen. Cooking together saves money and provides a relaxing break from academic coursework. Over the past year, we have established clear domestic guidelines that prevent unnecessary clutter and culinary disasters.

Task division makes our shared cooking process smooth and enjoyable. If Marco chops the onions and garlic, I prepare the vegetable broth and measure spices. We know that if you heat olive oil too quickly in a stainless pan, garlic burns rapidly and tastes bitterly unpleasant. Therefore, Marco keeps the gas flame low while stirring continuously until the aromatics release their fragrance.

Our kitchen workspace is relatively small, so cleanliness requires constant maintenance while cooking.
