When Dad Tried to Fix the Car Himself

I am Jake. Last Sunday our car broke down on the driveway, and Dad insisted he could fix it without calling a garage. The afternoon turned into a family comedy full of tools, advice, and phrasal verbs.

The engine would not start, though the lights still came on. Dad opened the bonnet and told me to hand in the torch from the shelf. He looked over the cables and muttered that something must have worn out during winter.

Mum suggested we ring up our neighbour, who used to work as a mechanic. Dad said he wanted to figure it out first. He looked up a video tutorial and paused it every few seconds to copy the steps.

We tried to take off a cover panel, but one screw would not budge. Dad asked me to hold on while he fetched different pliers.
