He Wanted to Know Whether the Shop Was Open

On Sunday morning my father called and said he wanted to know whether the repair shop was open. He needed to fix a lamp before guests arrived, and he was not sure what time the owner usually arrived.

I told him I would check online and ask whether the website listed holiday hours. The homepage did not say if Sunday service existed, so I messaged a friend who lives nearby. I asked whether she knew what time the shop closed on weekdays.

She replied that she thought the shop opened at nine, but she could not remember whether it stayed open through lunch. She suggested I call and ask whether someone could accept the lamp before noon.

I dialled the number and asked if the technician was available. The receptionist asked whether I had visited before.
