Last month I toured a manufacturing plant where electronic components were produced for hospitals across Europe. The visit was arranged by my cousin Elena, who was hired by the company as a quality engineer two years ago. She explained that every device was tested twice before it was shipped by road to distribution centres.
At the entrance our group was greeted by a safety officer who checked our badges and handed out helmets. We were told that photography was forbidden in certain zones because proprietary designs were protected by strict contracts. A short film was shown in the briefing room, and key rules were explained by a narrator whose voice was recorded in three languages.
In the assembly hall circuit boards were soldered by precision machines that were operated by technicians in clean suits.
