A Conference in Lisbon, Which Transformed My Network
Registration opened in January for a professional conference, which the European Media Institute organises every two years. I booked flights early because Lisbon, which I had never visited for work, promised both learning and mild adventure.
The opening keynote, which a journalist from Helsinki delivered, examined trust in digital newsrooms. Her slides, which avoided jargon, made complex ethics accessible to an audience of mixed backgrounds. She, whose investigations had exposed procurement fraud, received sustained applause before questions began.
Workshop rooms, which occupied the lower level of the convention centre, filled quickly after coffee breaks. I chose a session on podcast analytics, which surprised colleagues who expected me to attend legal panels. The facilitator, who produced shows for three national broadcasters, shared metrics that contradicted industry assumptions.
At lunch on the first day, I sat beside Ana, who coordinates training for public broadcasters in Portugal.
