The Historic Bridge, Which Spans Our River, Needs Repair
The Riverside Bridge, which has connected our town's two halves since 1892, will close for repairs in autumn. Engineers, who inspected the structure last month, found corrosion in joints that decades of salt and vibration accelerated.
The bridge, which local residents treat as a symbol rather than mere infrastructure, appears on postcards and the town crest. Tourists, who photograph it from the embankment, rarely learn that freight trains once crossed beside pedestrians until a separate rail bridge opened.
Mayor Alvarez, who announced the closure at a press conference, emphasised safety over convenience. Detour routes, which planners marked with temporary signs, will add fifteen minutes to commutes crossing the river daily. Businesses, which rely on foot traffic from the old town to the market square, worry about lost customers.
Heritage officials, who granted protected status in 1987, must approve any material changes to visible stonework.
