Diary Entries From a Month in Kyoto, Which Taught Me Stillness
Day 3
I arrived yesterday, which feels longer ago because jet lag distorts mornings. My guesthouse, which sits in a lane too narrow for cars, creaks politely when I climb to the second floor. The owner, who speaks little English, bowed twice and pointed to slippers I must not wear upstairs.
Day 7
Temple visits, which I scheduled too densely at first, blur unless I write immediately after. Kinkaku-ji, which reflects gold across a pond even on cloudy days, drew crowds that photographs understate. A monk, whose robe caught my eye near the exit, walked silently past souvenir stalls without glancing at them.
Day 11
The bamboo grove, which tourists reach by bus from central Kyoto, sounds unlike anything I expected. Wind, which moves through stalks high above, creates rhythm like distant applause.
