Reporting Back from the Coastal Research Trip
Our team returned from the coastal research trip with notebooks full of measurements and memory cards full of wave footage. I was asked to report back to the department on Monday morning, summarising findings without drowning colleagues in technical detail.
The expedition aimed to compare erosion rates at three bays affected differently by harbour construction. What we observed during the second week was accelerated retreat near the eastern breakwater, confirming hypotheses discussed before departure but never tested in winter conditions.
It was Dr Lin who insisted we remain an extra day when instruments recorded an unusual storm surge. That decision proved valuable, because it was that surge that revealed how sediment transport diverged from existing models. Her caution protected the integrity of our dataset.
Students worked in pairs, rotating between drone mapping and shoreline profiling.
