Municipal politics rarely supplies literary sentences, yet election night forced our campaign team to speak in structures we had only taught in grammar workshops. Only after the vote did we understand the coalition's fragility, and only after the vote did opponents front their contradictions without fear.
What the results showed was not defeat but insufficient mandate. What insufficient mandate meant was continued negotiation with independents who held balance. It was balance that tiny shifts could overturn, and it was overturn everyone anticipated within weeks.
It was weeks, not months, before the housing alliance cracked. It was housing policy that had united disparate parties during the campaign. This policy we must now interpret differently, the largest partner announced at breakfast television.
What breakfast television excels at is simplification. What simplification destroys is nuance voters deserved before casting ballots.
