Little Did We Know That the Festival Would Rewrite Our Routines
Memoir fragment for a community anthology. Little did we know that the festival would rewrite our routines when we volunteered to staff the midnight screening queue in borrowed high-visibility jackets.
What we expected was glamorous proximity to directors. What we received was walkie-talkies, damp pavement, and lessons in emphasis. It was emphasis that programme director Lidia taught without naming grammar: This queue we protect from bottleneck; that gate we open only when fire marshal signals.
It was fire marshal signals that governed nights more than artistic taste. It was taste we debated anyway while handing out numbered wristbands. Rarely have strangers become allies so quickly over shared thermos tea.
Never before had I fronted responsibility so explicitly at 02:15: This emergency lane we keep clear; those cables we tape before rain returns.
