I. The Poor Widow

Once upon a time, there is a poor widow. A widow is a woman with no husband. Her husband is dead.

The widow has one son. His name is Jack. She also has a cow. The cow is white, and her name is Milky-white.

Jack and his mother live in a little old house with a garden. Jack’s room is at the top of the house, under the roof. It is a small room, but it has a window.

Every morning, Milky-white gives milk. Jack and his mother take the milk to the market. They sell it there. With the money, they buy bread. That is how they live. They have nothing else. Only the milk from Milky-white.

But one morning, Jack goes out to the cow with his bucket. He sits down next to her.
