I. The First Story: The Poor Shoemaker

In a small town there lives a shoemaker. He makes shoes for people. He works hard every day, and he is a good and honest man. He lives with his wife in a little house. His shop is in the same house.

But times are bad. It is not his fault, but he gets poorer and poorer. Soon he has no money at all. He has only one piece of leather. Leather is the skin of an animal. People make shoes and bags from it.

One evening he looks at his leather for a long time.

“This is my last piece of leather,” he says to his wife. “It is only enough for one pair of shoes.”

His wife sits down next to him. She looks at the leather too.

“Only one pair?” she asks.
