I. The False Uncle

A long time ago, in a big city in China, there lived a poor tailor called Mustapha. A tailor is a man who makes clothes. Mustapha had a wife and only one child, a son called Aladdin.

Aladdin was a lazy boy who never listened to anyone. His father wanted to teach him to make clothes. But the boy always ran away from the shop and played in the streets all day. His father was so unhappy about his son that he became ill, and a few months later he died. After that, Aladdin’s mother spun cotton into thread and sold the thread to buy bread. Aladdin did not help her. He went on living like this until he was fifteen.

One day, when he was playing in a square, a man stopped to watch him.
