I. The Woodcutter and the Forty Thieves

A long time ago, in a town in Persia, there lived two brothers. Their names were Cassim and Ali Baba. When their father died, he left them very little money. But Cassim married a rich woman. She had a shop, a big storeroom full of goods and a lot of land. So very soon Cassim became one of the richest merchants in the town.

Ali Baba married a woman who was as poor as he was. They lived with their children in a small, simple house. Every day Ali Baba went to the forest, cut wood and sold it in the town. He had three donkeys, and that was all.

One day, when he was working in the forest, he saw a big cloud of dust. It was coming towards him. Soon he could see men on horses.
