I. The Cyclone

Dorothy lived in the middle of the great flat grasslands of Kansas. She had no parents, so she lived on a farm with Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Under the floor of their small house there was a dark hole, the cyclone cellar. A cyclone is a terrible wind that turns round and round and can break any house.

Everything on the farm was grey: the land, the grass and the house. Aunt Em never smiled, and Uncle Henry never laughed. Only Toto made Dorothy laugh. He was a little black dog with long soft hair, and Dorothy loved him very much.

One day the sky was even greyer than usual, and a strong wind began to blow. Suddenly Uncle Henry stood up.

“There’s a cyclone coming, Em!” he called. “I’ll go and look after the animals.”
