I. Jonathan’s Diary: The Journey

My name is Jonathan Harker. I am a young lawyer from Exeter, in the south-west of England, and I work for a kind old lawyer called Mr Hawkins. One spring, Mr Hawkins sent me on a long journey to the east of Europe. A rich nobleman, Count Dracula, wanted to buy a house near London, and I had to take him the papers. The house was called Carfax. It was a big, lonely old place with high stone walls, and it stood near the river at Purfleet, east of the city.

Before I left, I said goodbye to Mina. Mina Murray was my fiancée, the girl I was going to marry. She was a teacher, clever and brave, and I promised to write to her often. I decided to keep a diary of my journey for her too.
