I. Mr Fogg and His New Servant
In the year 1872, a man called Phileas Fogg lived at number 7, Savile Row, in London. He was about forty years old. He was tall and handsome, with fair hair and a calm face. He was rich, but nobody knew where his money came from. He had no wife and no children, and he did not seem to have any friends. He was a member of the Reform Club, a large, quiet club for rich men in the centre of London.
Nobody knew much about Mr Fogg, because he never talked about himself. He spoke very little, and he never seemed to hurry. Yet he was never late for anything. He knew the map of the world very well. Yet nobody ever saw him leave London.
Every day of his life was exactly the same.
