I. Against My Father’s Advice
I was born in the year 1632 in the city of York, in the north of England. My father came from Bremen in Germany. He made good money as a merchant and then settled in York, where he married my mother. Her family was called Robinson. Our German family name was Kreutznaer, but English people could not say it well. So they called us Crusoe, and that is how I became Robinson Crusoe.
I was the third son. My eldest brother was a soldier, and he died in a battle in Flanders. We never learned what happened to my second brother. My father wanted me to study law. But I only wanted one thing: I wanted to go to sea.
One morning my father called me to his room. He was old and ill, and he spoke to me very seriously.
