I. Part One: The Shipwreck

My name is Lemuel Gulliver. My father had a small farm in Nottinghamshire, and I was the third of his five sons. I went to Cambridge, and then I studied medicine in London and Holland.

For some years I was a ship’s doctor. In London I married Mary Burton, and we had children. But my work on land did not go well, and the sea called me again.

On the 4th of May 1699 I sailed from Bristol on a ship called the Antelope. A terrible storm drove us north-west of Van Diemen’s Land. On the 5th of November the air was full of mist. Suddenly a sailor saw a rock very close to us. The wind was too strong, and the ship hit the rock and broke apart.

Six of us got into the small boat and rowed until we had no more strength.
