I. The Troll’s Mirror

Listen carefully, because this story begins with a troll. When we come to the end, we will know more than we know now.

Once there was a wicked troll, one of the very worst. Some people said that he was the devil himself. One day the troll made a mirror, and it put him in a very good mood. It was a wicked mirror. Everything good and lovely looked small and poor in it. But everything bad and ugly looked even bigger and worse. The prettiest fields looked like boiled spinach, and the kindest people looked ugly and silly. When a good thought came into someone’s head, the mirror turned it into a bad one. The troll laughed and laughed. He thought that it was the best joke in the world.

The troll had a school, and his pupils carried the mirror to every country.
