I. My Neighbour’s House
When I was younger and softer, my father gave me some advice that I have been turning over in my mind ever since.
“Whenever you feel like criticising anyone,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the chances that you’ve had.”
He said no more, but I understood that he meant a great deal more than that. Because of his words, I have always tried not to judge people too quickly. This habit has made many strange people open their hearts to me, and it has also made me listen to a lot of very boring ones. But my patience has a limit. When I came back from the East last autumn, I wanted the whole world to stand still and behave well for ever. I wanted no more wild trips into other people’s hearts.
