I. The Ship from Smyrna
On the twenty-fourth of February 1815, a large ship called the Pharaon sailed slowly into the old port of Marseilles. She had come from Smyrna, Trieste and Naples, and as soon as people saw her sails, a crowd gathered on the harbour wall to watch her arrive. The Pharaon belonged to Monsieur Morrel, a kind and honest shipowner, and everyone in the town knew her.
A young man was standing on the deck and giving orders to the sailors. He was tall and slim, with dark eyes and black hair, and he moved with the quiet calm of someone who had lived at sea since he was a child. His name was Edmond Dantès, and he was only nineteen years old.
Monsieur Morrel was too impatient to wait on shore, so he took a small boat and came out to the ship himself.
