I. Mrs Lynde Is Surprised
Mrs Rachel Lynde lived just where the main road of Avonlea dipped down into a little hollow with a brook running through it. Her kitchen window looked out on that road, and very little happened on it that Mrs Rachel did not see. She was a busy woman who ran the Sewing Circle, helped with the Sunday school and still found time to watch her neighbours.
One afternoon in early June she was sitting at her window, knitting a cotton quilt, when she saw Matthew Cuthbert drive past. He was wearing his best suit and a white collar, and he was driving the buggy with the sorrel mare. This was a great surprise, because Matthew was the shyest man alive. He hated to go among strangers or to any place where he might have to talk.
