One Film Before the Train
Maya's train leaves in the morning. Tonight she wants one film with her brother Sam, on his sofa, the way they watched cartoons when they were small. They have talked all week, but they have not sat still together. Sam turns the TV on. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus and YouTube are all waiting. If they spend the evening only choosing, the visit will end with a dark screen.
Sam opens Netflix first. The app recommends a loud series, because he watched something like it last week. He starts an episode. Maya looks at the screen and shakes her head. She wants a film with a beginning and an end, not one more episode. Sam stops it. The room goes quiet. Maya pulls her feet up onto the sofa. "I leave after breakfast," she says.
