A Clear Subject

Noah wants the coach to know he can play this weekend. Last night the coach wrote to the team: "Email me. I want every answer in one place, not in a chat." Noah is at the kitchen table with his phone. If this note is messy, his name may get lost. He wants one clear message, and he wants it sent before he leaves for practice.

He opens Gmail. The subject box is empty. His sister leans over his shoulder. "Write the subject first," she says. "I read that line before I open anything." Noah types I CAN PLAY THIS WEEKEND. The letters are all capitals. On the screen they look like shouting. He deletes them and writes the same words in a normal way: I can play this weekend.

Then he writes the message. "Hello Coach Adeyemi," he begins.
