The Appointment in Budapest
Ruth wanted to sit at Sunday lunch and chew on both sides. A tooth on the left had cracked, and every meal had become a small negotiation. At home the dentist could see her, but not before that lunch, and not for a long stretch of meals after it. Her daughter Helen found a clinic in Budapest that could take her within the week. People do travel for teeth, and for joints, when the wait at home is the problem. Ruth did not want a tour of that subject. She wanted the one tooth.
They went together. Helen had read enough to be nervous about the wrong things, and she kept two useful rules: ask who is treating you, and do not leave the same day. The clinic received patients from other countries, and a coordinator met them in English, so Ruth did not have to guess.
