The Room by the Station
Nina wanted one plain room, one night, near the station where her aunt would be waiting. She had the date. She had the aunt's card in her bag, a number written in ink. She opened the travel app anyway, because her payment card was saved there and the chat said it would be faster than a phone call.
The first reply was cheerful and wrong. Based on your trip to Lisbon, it said, you might like a spa hotel on the coast, an hour from the station, with a sea view and breakfast included. She had liked the spa. She had gone with a friend, in another year, for no aunt at all. She typed that she did not want a spa. She wanted a bed near the trains, and she named the street her aunt had written on the card.
