Nora Puts the Spoon Down
Nora wanted a flower from the blue pot. She had pressed a seed into the soil, and the top still looked flat and quiet. Her brother Emil wanted to see the plant today. He stood over the pot with a spoon.
"If I move a little soil, we can look," he said. "Maybe it is already growing, and the soil is hiding it."
Nora wanted to look too. That was the hard part. She wanted the flower, and the flower needed the seed to stay down in the dark. If they opened the soil to check, they might break a root that was still too small to see. She did not know if a root was there. She knew she did not want to be the person who pulled it apart.
She put her hand on the spoon before it touched the soil.
