The Sand in France

Captain Webb wanted one thing in the water: the shore of France. The sea between England and France is the English Channel. It is wide. The year was 1875. Webb left Dover, in England. He tried this swim once before. That time, he did not arrive. This time he was in the sea again. People know him as the first person to swim this sea with no life jacket. He did not hold a float. He did not sit in the boat. He had to swim.

A boat stayed near him. The people in it watched his head. They were close, and they did not carry him. A thick grease covered his skin. The grease came from a porpoise. It was there to help against the cold. The cold was still in the water. Webb swam breaststroke.
