A Picnic by the Serpentine

Sam wants lunch by the water. He and Nora are in Hyde Park, in London, and the sun is strong. Nora carries the bag with their food. Ahead of them, people are playing with a ball on the grass, and the shouts are loud.

"Not here," Sam says. "I want a place where we can hear the water."

Nora looks at the game, then at the path. "All right. But this bag is heavy. If we walk too far, I want to sit down."

"The lake is close," Sam says. "We can follow this path."

They walk. The path is warm under their shoes. A dog runs past, and a child laughs. Nora moves the bag from one hand to the other. Sam stays a little ahead, because he wants to see the water first.
