Afternoon tea is a very famous tradition in the United Kingdom. It started a long time ago in the year 1840. A woman named Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, was the person who began this custom. In those days, people usually ate only two meals a day: breakfast in the morning and dinner late in the evening. Anna often felt hungry in the middle of the afternoon. She asked her servants to bring her some tea and a small snack to her room.

Soon, she began to invite her friends to join her. They sat together, drank tea, and talked about their lives. This small meal became very popular among wealthy people first. They liked the idea of meeting friends in the afternoon for a light snack. Later, it became a common tradition for many people across the country. Today, people all over the world associate afternoon tea with British culture.

An afternoon tea usually includes three main parts. The first part consists of small sandwiches. These sandwiches are often very thin and have different fillings. A very traditional filling is cucumber and butter. Other popular choices are egg mayonnaise, smoked salmon with cream cheese, or ham and mustard. These sandwiches are easy to pick up with your fingers and eat in one or two bites.

The second part of the tea is the scones. Scones are a type of small, round bread that is a bit sweet. They are served warm with two important things: clotted cream and jam. Clotted cream is a very thick and rich type of cream. Most people use strawberry or raspberry jam. There is often a funny debate about which one to put on the scone first: the cream or the jam? Different regions in England have different rules for this.

The final part of the meal is the cakes and pastries. These are small, sweet treats like tiny chocolate cakes, fruit tarts, or lemon biscuits. They look very beautiful and are often decorated with sugar or fruit. Because these are the sweetest items, people usually eat them last. It is a lovely way to finish the meal with something sweet.

Of course, the most important part is the tea itself. People usually drink black tea, such as Earl Grey or English Breakfast tea. They often add a little bit of milk and sometimes sugar. The tea is served in a teapot, and you pour it into delicate china cups. Using a nice cup and saucer makes the experience feel very special and elegant.

Nowadays, people do not have afternoon tea every single day because it takes a lot of time. Many people save it for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or meeting old friends. You can find afternoon tea in many cozy cafes and expensive hotels. It is often called "High Tea" by mistake, but traditional afternoon tea is served at a low table in a comfortable lounge.

Going for afternoon tea is a great way to relax and enjoy a slow afternoon. It is not just about the food and the drink.
