If I Had Learned SQL Sooner, I Would Run Audits Faster

The rapid digitisation of corporate finance has fundamentally transformed what it means to be an effective internal auditor. Early in my accountancy career, I relied almost exclusively on desktop spreadsheet applications, painstakingly exporting static comma-separated files and writing complex nested formulas to identify suspicious transactions. While that manual workflow appeared sufficient a decade ago, contemporary enterprise datasets now contain millions of transactions that quickly overwhelm traditional spreadsheets.

If I had mastered relational databases and SQL queries earlier in my career, I would conduct quarterly compliance audits in minutes today rather than wrestling with bloated spreadsheets for days. If I had embraced automated database querying five years ago, my professional capability as a forensic auditor would be vastly superior right now. Past educational investments or omissions directly define our current technical efficiency and professional confidence.
