Email to a Friend About the Festival, Which We Almost Missed
Dear Clara, I am typing this email from the wooden verandah of our rental cabin on Gotland, which is glowing in the magical twilight of the Baltic midsummer. We reached the island late yesterday evening after a succession of chaotic travel mishaps, which nearly caused us to miss the annual town lantern festival altogether. Now that we are relaxing with coffee, I must recount the day.
Our journey started on Thursday morning in Stockholm, where unseasonal summer squalls caused severe electrical signalling malfunctions along the coastal railway. The passenger train, which was supposed to reach the southern ferry port before midday, stood motionless in pine forests for nearly four hours. Henrik, whose cheerful optimism usually keeps our travel spirits high, actually began studying alternative ferry timetables on his phone with visible anxiety.
