The Beatles' Final Concert on a London Rooftop

In January 1969, The Beatles had not played a live concert in nearly three years. What the band needed was a dramatic conclusion to their documentary film, *Let It Be*. Rarely does a group of such magnitude decide to perform unannounced, but the four musicians agreed to play on the roof of their Apple Corps headquarters in central London.

They ought to have secured a performance permit from the local authorities, but secure one they did not. Instead, on a freezing Thursday lunchtime, they simply plugged their amplifiers into the building's power supply. The biting wind meant John Lennon performed in his wife's fur coat, while Ringo Starr wore a red raincoat belonging to his own wife, Maureen.

Not until the first chords of "Get Back" echoed across the street did the public realise what was happening.
