Not Until the Final Mix Did the Forest Sound Real
Rarely do audiences consider the origin of the sounds they hear in a nature documentary. When a viewer watches a kiwi bird stepping through the undergrowth in a New Zealand forest, they assume the audio was captured outdoors. In truth, the microphones usually pick up too much wind noise to be useful.
What the director actually needed was crisp, isolated audio of the wildlife. Because the location recordings were unusable, our team had to recreate every rustle inside a Wellington sound studio. I thought dropping dried flax leaves would simulate the bird's footsteps perfectly, and it did.
We spent days experimenting with unexpected materials to match the visual cues on the screen. Some colleagues suggested we ought to have used existing digital sound libraries instead of working manually. However, a synthetic approach often lacks the organic texture of physical objects.
